Navigating Friendship : Biblical wisdom about it - A Teen edition

Praise the lord my brethren

A teen's choice of friends has a major influence on how their life unfolds during the turbulent adolescent years. Friends are essential in molding a person's morals, convictions, and conduct. Teenagers can turn to the Bible for direction and ageless wisdom as they negotiate the difficulties of friendships..

Proverbs 13:20 states, "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm." This verse encapsulates the importance of surrounding oneself with friends who exhibit wisdom and integrity. Here are some key biblical principles to consider when choosing friends:

1.    Character Matters: Proverbs 22:24-25 advises, "Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared." Teenagers should seek friends who demonstrate qualities such as honesty, kindness, and humility.

2.    Positive Influence: 1 Corinthians 15:33 warns, "Do not be misled: 'Bad company corrupts good character.'" Teenagers should choose friends who inspire them to grow spiritually, morally, and emotionally. Surrounding themselves with peers who exhibit positive behaviors and values can uplift and encourage them in their own journey.

3.    Shared Values: Amos 3:3 asks, "Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?" Teenagers should seek friends who share their faith and values. Having common ground in beliefs and principles can strengthen friendships and provide a solid foundation for mutual support and encouragement.

4.    Discernment: Proverbs 12:26 advises, "The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray." Teenagers should exercise discernment in their choice of friends, recognizing that not all relationships are beneficial. They should seek friendships that align with their goals, aspirations, and convictions.

5.    Forgiveness and Grace: Ephesians 4:32 encourages, "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." Friendships inevitably encounter challenges and conflicts. Teenagers should strive to cultivate relationships characterized by grace, forgiveness, and reconciliation.

6.    Lead by Example: Proverbs 27:17 declares, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." Teenagers should aspire to be positive influences in their friendships, leading by example through their words, actions, and attitudes.

The Bible offers timeless wisdom for teenagers navigating the difficulties faced in friendship. By choosing friends who exhibit wisdom, integrity, and shared values, teenagers can cultivate meaningful relationships that enrich their lives and contribute to their personal growth and development. As they journey through adolescence, may they seek God's guidance in their friendships, trusting in His wisdom to lead them on the path of righteousness.
